“We all know about Brent Headon, who’s still in a Calgary children’s hospital recovering,” she says. “This is such an important subject.”

There’s no fee to enrol and once a group has signed up, it costs $9 for members to take the course.

The ASDC is a provincially funded network of Centres whose purpose is to coordinate and enhance the services and resources available to Alberta’s emerging athletes and coaches.

The AEP program is the premium service of the ASDC Network, targeting regional athletes that showcase the athletic potential to succeed at a Provincial or National level. The program varies from region to region but generally aims to provide them with the necessary specialized support services to develop to their full potential.

The athletes will receive complimentary non-technical coaching and support (including nutrition advice, specific High Performance training, mental skills training, etc.) to improve their sport performance. The services are coordinated by an Athletic Enhancement Team (AET) that works together to direct and develop the athletes in the program. Jen Lapointe, Program facilitator for the ASDC Southwest, will head up a group that includes; Steve Szilagyi, Jennifer Spriddle and Tim Takahashi. Steve will serve as strength and conditioning coach, Jennifer will lend expertise in the areas of Sport Psychology and Mental Training Skills, and Tim will lend expertise in exercise physiology, injury prevention and drug awareness.

“This is an awesome opportunity for some of southern Alberta’s most promising athletes to employ services that few athletes have access to in our area.” stated Program Facilitator Jen Lapointe.

The expanded program will now service 34 athletes from 15 different sports and 8 different communities.

The Athlete Enhancement Program (AEP) is for the emerging and elite athletes in central Alberta and they receive a variety of sport science supports so that they can stay at home longer while still receiving high quality service.  Those services include: performance testing, strength & conditioning, mental skills training, sport nutrition, injury prevention, biomechanics, media training, sponsorship support and much more.

This year’s program features 26 athletes representing 19 different sports from 9 different central Alberta communities.
